Hola todos! Catching up on the blogging, for today’s installment I will talk about the trip across to Tiwanaku, this ruin is about 2 hours away from La Paz and is an old Pre-Columbian ruin that goes back several hundred years before the Inca’s and the Spanish Conquests.
I had booked onto a fairly cheap tour out here and it was quite an uneventful ride out on the minibus from La Paz, save meeting my new best friend who’s not Ed Sheeran on this trip. We arrive and pay the entrance fee and our guide walks us around the different spots of the site.
It is quite a big place though only about half of it has been excavated, what can be seen however is quite an impressive collection of relics to this ancient place.
Not much is known about whatever the precursor civilization that was here was though among what they left behind were some impressive stone structures such as the Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate) and the 7 story pyramid of Akapana, of which only half of it is excavated.
Looking round further we have statues of different sizes of what I think was Pachamama, mother earth, the biggest here is 24 feet tall and named ‘the Bennett monoloth’ named after the archeologist who found it. However it is inside their museum which they wouldn’t let anyone take pictures of.
There are other parts to this site which I don’t think we got to have a proper look round, the guide was sort of rushing our group from place to place, which was a bit of a shame, would have liked to have looked round here for another hour really.
After lunch I have a chat with my new best friend who’s not Ed Sheeran on the way back and we later meet up for a few beers and have a good laugh sharing stories of what we’ve been up to on the road. Been a while since we met a decent geezer to be fair and it’s always a plus.
